FIRE DESTROYS HOME ON HEMLOCK ROAD IN COSBY
COSBY—An early morning fire on Monday, Aug. 10 destroyed a foreclosed house on Hemlock Road in Cosby that was up for sale, the Cocke County Fire Department reported.
A total of 14 firefighters from the Cosby Volunteer Fire Department and the CCFD responded to the 6:40 a.m. fire, according to CCFD firefighter Cody Strom.
The two-story, traditional home with a full basement is located at 2852 Hemlock Road. Firefighters said it was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.

INTENSE STORM KNOCKS OUT POWER, DOWNS TREES
NEWPORT—An intense storm with strong winds, lightning, and heavy rain hit Newport on Wednesday leaving several neighborhoods without power, ranging from four minutes to over four hours, the Newport Utilities reported.
Seventy-four residences in the golf course area lost power at 5:41 p.m. for 45 minutes, while 50 residences in the Shady Rest/Lark/Sweetwater area lost power for 84 minutes, from 3:34 p.m. to 4:58 p.m., according to Jimmy Robertson with NU. Photos by NELSON MORAIS, ©2015 NEWPORT PUBLISHING CO.

GAS LEAK AT 8TH STREET
An excavator at work on the front yard of a residence at 309 8th Street hit a gas main while replacing the sewer line to the house, on Monday, Aug. 3.

MONDAY CRASH ON HIGHWAY 25/70 IN NEWPORT
A 1994 Ford F250 allegedly pulled from a turning lane headed east on Highway 25/70, on Monday, Aug. 3, around 1:30 p.m., and was hit in the rear by a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier traveling in the opposite direction, the Newport Police Department reported. OVER 40 CHURCHES COOPERATE IN OLD-FASHIONED PICNIC, 2015
Over 40 churches, including 37 members of the East Tennessee Baptist Association, worked together to organize Saturday’s Old-Fashioned Picnic, a gathering hosted by Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

PARROTTSVILLE CELEBRATES JULY 4TH
Parrottsville held its first Fourth of July celebration this summer. It was estimated that over 1,000 turned out to celebrate the event. Singing, games, food and fireworks were enjoyed by all in attendance.

POPCORN SUTTON JAM 2015
Thousands attended the Popcorn Sutton Jam. The jam raised close to $9,200, said Diana Samples, who organized the Save the Jugs Pageant that raised money for the Susan G. Komen foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports cancer research and assists women with breast cancer.
