FIRE DESTROYS HOME ON HEMLOCK ROAD IN COSBY

  • COSBY—An early morning fire on Monday, Aug. 10 destroyed a foreclosed house on Hemlock Road in Cosby that was up for sale, the Cocke County Fire Department reported. A total of 14 firefighters from the Cosby Volunteer Fire Department and the CCFD responded to the 6:40 a.m. fire, according to CCFD firefighter Cody Strom. The two-story, traditional home with a full basement is located at 2852 Hemlock Road. Firefighters said it was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.   • NEWPORT—An intense storm with strong winds, lightning, and heavy rain hit Newport on Wednesday leaving several neighborhoods without power, ranging from four minutes to over four hours, the Newport Utilities reported. Seventy-four residences in the golf course area lost power at 5:41 p.m. for 45 minutes, while 50 residences in the Shady Rest/Lark/Sweetwater area lost power for 84 minutes, from 3:34 p.m. to 4:58 p.m., according to Jimmy Robertson with NU. GAS LEAK AT 8TH STREET

MONDAY CRASH ON HIGHWAY 25/70 IN NEWPORT

  • A 1994 Ford F250 allegedly pulled from a turning lane headed east on Highway 25/70, on Monday, Aug. 3, around 1:30 p.m., and was hit in the rear by a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier traveling in the opposite direction, the Newport Police Department reported.
